African Originals was founded in Kenya in 2016 by Alex Chappatte, first inspired by her father's homemade Pimm’s and later shaped through a career at global beverage companies including Pernod Ricard and AB InBev. Wanting to showcase Kenyan ingredients, flavours, culture and craftmanship, African Originals started in a simple container in Nairobi before building a 28,000 square foot production facility where all processes can be carried out in-house, from pressing fruit to distilling in their 400L copper pot still, bottling and distributing. The African Originals gin range has grown to include their Kenyan Originals gin range, their 5.8 Gin range, and their Mara Edition in collaboration with the Maasai community.

"Living and working in Africa, I was struck by how few quality food and beverage products were made locally. That impression deepened when I moved to Kenya; the bar scene was split between low-quality mass-market drinks and expensive imports.
