Coast Tonic Water - Review & Information
Coast Tonic Water
Country: UK Launch Year: 2020 Price: £11.99 for 12 bottles Coast Tonic Water was launched in 2020 by friends and founders, Richard Watson and Joe McCanta, with the aim of creating a tonic water for an even more refreshing G&T. Coast Tonic Water uses only natural fruit sugars. It features a balanced combination of three different natural tart notes – from citric, malic (think green apple) and succinic (think limes) acid. These are combined with natural quinine and a touch of sea salt to enhance the flavours and mouthfeel and be evocative of the British coast. |
The Gin Guide Review
Coast Tonic Water is fresh, light and crisp with a satisfying fine fizz to it. You instantly notice that it isn't as sweet, bitter or heavily flavoured with citrus as many tonic waters on the market, which allows the gin to really shine through and allows you to determine the level of citrus, fruit or herbaceous character in your G&T with your choice of garnish. It makes Coast Tonic Water a versatile and well-balance mixer combined with an appealing brand. - Paul Jackson, 2020. |

Joe McCanta & Richard Watson
Joe tells us all about the inspiration for Coast Tonic Water:
"The inspiration for our tonic water first came from the Catalonian coast. I first discovered the Catalonian sparkling water Vichy Catalan whilst designing a tasting menu with the chefs of the famed el Bulli restaurant - it was incredible how filled with minerals this sparkling water was – super moreish with a hefty touch of salt – but never getting in the way of the complex food it was paired with.
But the Spanish local tonic water was always the opposite of moreish – sickly sweet, too bitter, and not at all nice. So in trying to create a happy balance, I mixed the two - half Vichy, half local tonic. The sum was way better than the parts. There was less of the sugar, less of the bitterness and this amazing touch of salt that made me thirsty for another sip. That was the model for our Coast Tonic."
And Richard tells us more about developing the product and the brand:
"We both felt that while mixers had evolved, they had evolved linearly without much innovation. The tonic water was a case in point - it was originally designed as a medicine. We wanted to forget convention and put that simple ideal of freshness and moreishness at the heart of the product.
Our tonic water felt so fresh and exciting. We naturally asked ourselves if we could extend that blueprint to other mixers - a moreish hint of sea salt, mineral mouthfeel, each blend with an evocative bouquet of essences based on a particular coastline.
Coast seemed such a natural choice of name for us. The Catalonian coast was obviously the original spark of idea, and the use of sea salt obviously chimed. We both shared a love of travel, and often noticed that our drinks seemed to taste better on the coast. We felt that Coast as a brand would really allow us to express that feeling of a Coastal time and a place."
