Explorer's Gin - Review & Tasting Notes
Explorer's Gin
Explorer's Gin London Dry was launched in 2019 by Hugh Anderson and Charles Andrews, founders of Wiltshire-based Downton Distillery. The distillery is located in a Grade 1 listed 14th Century barn next to the historic Downton Manor. The manor is said to be one of the longest inhabited houses in the South of England and was previously owned by Sir Walter Raleigh and hosted Queen Elizabeth I. The Downton Distillery team macerates the 15 botanicals in the base spirit before vapour-infusing with a one-shot distillation. The inspiration for the gin comes from the ‘Golden Age of Exploration’ in the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries, during which European ships travelled around the world discovering new continents and trading routes. |
The Gin Guide Review
Downton Manor is such a historical and traditional location, while in contrast the concept of exploration is all about breaking boundaries and discovering something new. Rather than a juxtaposition, Explorer's Gin harmoniously brings together classic gin characteristics with a contemporary twist. Familiar juniper, mixed citrus and liquorice flavours are joined by Western Red Cedar which enhances the piney notes, fennel brings out a herbal side, and a kick of warming pepper spice commences a lingering finish. It's a gin with complexity and depth and it is engaging through having clearly identifiable characteristics and stages along the flavour journey. Adding a dash of water highlights verbena and citrus peel notes, while tonic water sees the gin cloud while maintaining its depth and balance as well as highlighting tangy citrus and lingering fennel. Ginger Ale also works very nicely as a mixer, softening the pepper notes and drawing out a subtly floral character. Citrus fruit or peels make for ideal garnish starting points. - Paul Jackson, 2020 |
