What did you do before launching DedBest Distillery and Contractor's Gin? I was in the music industry for many years before learning carpentry skills at which point I started working with best mate Bob Dedman in the construction industry. During Covid we cooked up the idea to start the distillery. What made you decide to move into distilling, and what's the inspiration behind your gin? It was mainly Covid and the urge to do something different! Our bottle is dark and moody…. More in the Whiskey vain (as this is what we actually wanted to make!). Our flavour is led by lemongrass - out of all the botanicals we experimented with we felt this was the star. What is the meaning and story behind your brand name? Contractor’s – Building Contractors…. Need I say more!? Can you tell us more about your distillery and your still? We are based on the beautiful Crockstead Farm in the East Sussex Countryside. We couldn't have asked for a better find. We have now expanded it with a sun terrace taproom and distillers workshop. We use a 50 litre copper still which is not only aesthetically pleasing put a perfect size for our current level of production. Can you tell us more about your distillation process? Our distillation process is reasonably straight forward. We use a grain spirit as a base and our carefully selected ratio of botanicals. Hibiscus & Lemongrass are the stars of the show. I will say that during Covid we tested MANY variants and we still have samples of them all to this day! What can visitors experience if they visit the distillery? It truly is a beautiful setting. Even just coming to enjoy a drink is a delightful experience. We have now installed a full distillers workshop. Come and create your very own individual bottle of gin, enjoy a cocktail or two. We even have luxury yurts available if you fancied a little stay over! What is your ambition for DedBest Distillery and Contractor's Gin in the years to come?
I would love the brand to be highly recognised in the south of England at least. Also to have a thriving venue that people come to visit from far and wide with lots of exciting events. What are your favourite ways to drink Contractor's Gin? The gin is so flavourful that it is best served with a quality Indian tonic. We find the best suited is Folkingtons. In the summer time we have been loving our Strawberry, Cucumber & Basil Liqueur in a spritz! Just add prosecco and soda water! Desert Island Gins: Which 3 gins would you take with you and why?
What's next for you and your gin/distillery - any exciting plans? Just continuing to grow, attend events and create a beautiful space for people to come and enjoy. You Might Also Like...
