What is the history of the Studer Distillery? In 1883, the Studer Distillery was founded in Entlebuch by the four Studer brothers as a distillery and liqueur and confectionery factory. The company remains family-owned today, with the fourth and fifth generations now jointly managing the business. From the very beginning, the factory produced the finest fruit brandies, particularly from Williams pears, cherries, raspberries, and plums. These brandies, made according to traditional recipes, still form the basis of our product range today. What inspired Distillery Studer to create Swiss Highland Gin? The founders of the Studer Distillery were a wealthy family at that time, which gave their sons the opportunity to travel across Europe. One of them visited England and explored various distilleries. In his notebooks from that period there is a recipe for a Dry Gin from one of the distilleries he visited. This recipe became the foundation for our gin production, which we started around 10 years ago, just before the “gin hype” really took off, and our Swiss Highland Gin is an ode to the beautiful and mountainous region of Entlebuch. The now over 140-year-old notebook is still in the family’s possession and is stored in the same house where we produce our gin today. What can visitors experience if they visit the distillery? We are somewhat off the beaten track, so you can combine a visit to our distillery with a beautiful tour of the Entlebuch region. Our company is housed in an old family home, where you can truly experience why we call ourselves “The House of the Good Spirit”. When you visit us, we not only recommend trying our gin but also exploring our extensive repertoire of classic Swiss brandies. Reto, our Master Distiller, will guide you through the distillery and share some of his vast expertise with you. What are the ambitions of Studer Distillery in the years to come? Our goal remains to produce high quality gins and spirits - an ambition we strive to achieve every single day. Additionally, we see the growing customer preference for low-alcohol beverages as an exciting opportunity to adapt our portfolio to these new drinking habits in the coming years. Two years ago, we introduced a non-alcoholic gin, marking our first step in this direction - preserving old traditions while integrating and embracing new ideas is both our ambition and challenge. What's next for you and your gin/distillery - any exciting plans? Currently, we are working on a new product that we are very excited to launch in 2025. It’s not gin, but it pairs perfectly with gin. So stay tuned to see what the House of the Good Spirit has in store for you in the future! 😊 What are your favourite ways to drink your gins?
Since I prefer a slightly sweeter taste, I love treating myself to our Swiss Highland Honey Gin “Wildflower” - our dry gin enriched with wildflower honey, which is delightful with Tonic Water. Another recommendation is to mix it with a Swiss herbal tea for a truly local experience. Of course, a classic Gin & Tonic with our Old Tom Gin or a Negroni is always an excellent choice as well.
