Snowdonia Spirit Co. - Meet the Makers

Get to know the stories and team behind Snowdonia Spirit Company. We caught up with founder Mike Trevena to find out more, including how it all started, the inspiration behind the brand, how best to serve their gins, Mike's desert island gins, and what the plans for the future are.

What did you do before establishing Snowdownia Spirit Co.?
Before diving into the spirits industry, we had spent years working in the drinks industry, helping brands grow through sales and marketing expertise. We’ve always had a deep appreciation for well-crafted spirits, and over time, we realised we wanted to create something of our own - something that truly reflected our passion for quality and flavour.

What made you decide to launch Snowdonia Spirit Co.?
Gin has always fascinated us - its versatility, its rich history, and the way you can build layers of flavour with botanicals. We wanted to craft something special, a gin that captures the essence of Wales, its rugged landscapes, and its rich traditions. Our gin is inspired by Welsh heritage, the flavours of nature, and the simple pleasure of a beautifully made drink.

What is the meaning and story behind your brand name?
The name Snowdonia Spirit Co. proudly reflects our deep connection to Wales and its breathtaking natural beauty. We wanted a name that spoke of Welsh heritage, craftsmanship, and the authenticity of its source. Snowdonia evokes images of wild landscapes, pure waters, and a spirit of adventure—all things that inspire our gin. Every sip is a taste of Wales, distilled with passion and care.

Can you tell us more about your distillation process?
Our gin is distilled with a meticulous approach, combining traditional techniques with a modern touch. We have a carefully selected mix of botanicals, blending classic notes of juniper and citrus with some more intriguing, locally inspired additions. We believe in allowing each botanical to shine, creating a beautifully layered gin that is both complex and incredibly smooth. Every batch is crafted with care, ensuring a spirit that is perfect for a classic G&T or something a little more adventurous. 

What are your favourite ways to drink your gins?
Each of our gins has its own perfect serve, designed to bring out the best of its unique flavour profile:

• Welsh Dry Gin: A twist of lemon, premium tonic, and served over a single large ice cube for a crisp, refreshing experience.
• Bara Brith Gin: Served with a twist of orange to enhance the rich, spiced fruitcake- inspired flavours.
• Lemon Gin: Best enjoyed simply, with a twist of lemon for a bright, zesty hit.
• Lovespoon Gin: Garnished with fresh raspberries and strawberries, bringing out the delicate floral and berry notes.

Desert Island Gins: Which 3 gins would you take with you and why?

• Dubrovnik Republic Dry Dalmatian Gin: Simple and elegant, with a distinctive and unique aroma from locally foraged juniper, sea fennel, immortelle, and bitter oranges. It makes a beautiful G&T.
• Cannonball - Double Juniper Navy Strength Edinburgh Gin: A powerhouse of gin flavour, making for an uplifting spirit and an excellent early Martini.
• VL92 Gin: Bold and complex, from the Netherlands - home of Genever - and a great reminder of where gin originated hundreds of years ago.

What is your ambition for Snowdonia Spirit Co. in the years to come?
We want Snowdonia Spirit Co. to be a true statement of Welsh craftsmanship and quality gin-making. Our goal is to grow our presence, introduce more people to the incredible flavours of our gin, and continue innovating with exciting new releases.

What's next for you and Snowdonia Spirit Co. - any exciting plans?
There’s always something exciting on the horizon at Snowdonia Spirit Co.! We’re experimenting with new botanical blends, looking at innovative ways to age and infuse our gin, and working on collaborations that celebrate the best of Wales. Whether it’s a special edition inspired by Welsh legends or a new twist on a classic, we can’t wait to share what’s coming next. Watch this space!
