Herefordshire Gins & Distilleries
Herefordshire’s gin history draws on its rich agricultural heritage, where orchards, fruit farms and potato fields have provided the local raw materials for spirit-making and cider making. The prominent Chase Distillery was founded in 2008 on its Herefordshire farm and used potatoes and apples grown on-site to make gin and vodka, before being acquired by Diageo and seeing production move to Scotland in 2025. Meanwhile, producers such as Penrhos Spirits (launched in 2018) have turned surplus fruit from their farm – blueberries, raspberries, apples – into handcrafted gin in a converted barn. And more recently, Rockfield Spirits launched in Hereford in 2023, utilising the site of a former cider mill, connecting with the county's heritage.
Authentic Herefordshire Distilleries: The gins featured in this guide are gins which, to the best of our knowledge, are produced in Herefordshire. There may be additional products named after places in Herefordshire or that are based in Herefordshire, however, they will not be featured in this guide if our understanding is that they are produced outside of Herefordshire.
Herefordshire Gin Reviews - A to Z
Penrhos Gin - Kington
|
Launched in 2018, Penrhos Spirits was established in Herefordshire by two farming families. The distillery is an old barn where co-founder Richard's grandmother, Constance, used to raise calves, and their copper pot CARL still is named Connie after her. Penrhos Spirits are proud to use wonky fruit in their gins, with blueberries being a signature botanical in Penrhos Dry Gin. They are also the first distillery to have moved from glass to 100% recycled aluminium bottles, cutting the carbon footprint of their packaging by 91%.

Meet the Makers
Get to know Herefordshire's finest gin creators and distillers in our 'Meet the Maker' interviews with Charles and Richard at Penrhos Spirits, Sarah at Rockfield Spirits, and Kim at Sly Gin. Find out what inspired them and how they created and launched their gins, how their gins are made, what botanicals are used, what you can experience if you visit their distilleries, how best to serve their gins, and what they have planned for the future:
Charles Turner & Richard Williams - Penrhos Spirits"We are Herefordshire fruit farmers - we grow strawberries, raspberries, cherries, blueberries and eating and cider apples. One day we we're enjoying a Saturday morning coffee when we thought we should be producing a gin with all our fruit!"
|
Sarah Scourfield - Rockfield Spirits"My husband, Paul, was inspired to create a product that would bring joy to a wide audience. The natural choice for us was gin! As for me, I found inspiration for our gin classes, envisioning a space where people could unwind and delve into the fascinating world of gin."
|
Kim Hutchinson - Sly Gin / Haven Distillery"I took over the business in March 2025 and wanted to keep the legacy alive and to keep the distillery and Sly Gin names on. We are a small batch artisan distillery that only produces around 100 bottles per batch. Some of the herbs we add to our gins are grown in our garden in Herefordshire, with no artificial flavourings, additives or sugars added to our Gins - all the flavours come from natural botanicals."
