Hotham's Leeds Dry Gin - Review & Tasting Notes
Hotham's Leeds Dry Gin
Founded in January 2018 by Emma Kinton and Simon Pownall who had met over a G&T in 2017, Hotham’s began as a Gin School and distillery based in a Grade 2 listed retail arcade in the Old Town area of Hull. Following the opening of their Leeds distillery, gin school and bar in 2020, Hotham's Leeds Dry Gin was launched an is produced in batches of up to 50 bottles in a copper alembic still. The Hotham's name is in honour of John Hotham, Governor of Hull in 1642, who reportedly refused a visit to Hull from King Charles I and toasted his decision with a glass of gin. |
The Gin Guide Review
Hotham's Leeds Dry Gin is all about Asian flavours of ginger, lime and basil, built around a traditional core of classic botanicals. It is aromatic and enticing on the nose and on the palate it begins with a wash of zesty lime and juniper before warming ginger spice develops through the finish, accompanied by the citrus spice of coriander seeds and herbaceous basil that balances with lingering lime sweetness. With the popular South Indian restaurant, Akbar's, being located next door to Hotham's distillery and bar in the centre of Leeds, it would be hard to resist getting in the spirit with their Leeds Dry Gin before a curry. Basil, lime or ginger all make for ideal garnish starting points to accentuate different elements of the gin as you prefer. - Paul Jackson, 2020 |

Meet the Makers
"One of our first dates was at a gin school, and we loved that creative process so much we bought and licensed a baby still to use at home. After receiving some great feedback from a master distiller, we decided to upscale and take our spirits to market." - Simon & Emma, Founders & Distillers
