Johari Distillery
|
Johari Gin was launched in 2023 by Mara & Mike Gama-Lobo with the aim of producing a homegrown Tanzanian gin that celebrates the flavours of the country. The gin is distilled in a 230L Muller still at Johari Distillery in Dar es Salaam, with a recipe developed by the late Roger Jorgensen, one of African's most esteemed distillers. The botanicals include African juniper (juniperus procera) sourced from the Lushoto Mountains, alongside 14 further botanicals including locally sourced baobab powder, coconut, seaweed, lime and Bird's Eye chilli. The name 'Johari' means 'jewel' and the bottles are inspired by calabashes - the African fruits which are traditionally dried to make containers, musical instruments or decorations.
