Kirkjuvagr Beyla Gin - Review & Tasting Notes
Kirkjuvagr Beyla Gin - Honey & Raspberry Old Tom
Kirkjuvagr Beyla Gin, pronounced 'kirk-u-vaar', was launched in 2019 by Orkney-based husband and wife Stephen Kemp (also a builder) and Aly Kemp (also a PE Teacher). With the gin featuring Orcadian honey, it is named after 'Beyla' the Norse goddess of bees, while Kirkjuvagr means 'Church in the Bay' in old Norse and was how Vikings described the location that is now Orkney's capital, Kirkwall. Kirkwall is now home to The Orkney Distillery which was opened in 2018 and saw Stephen and Aly moving production to Orkney and now offering tours and gin making experiences. |
The Gin Guide Review
The Orkney Distillery has established an impressive portfolio of gins and Kirkjuvagr Beyla Gin is their first flavoured gin release. While taking a step into the hugely popular 'pink gin' market, this is not just another sickly sweet gimmick. It's hugely enticing with its bright, fruity and bold aroma and character. The use of honey is clever and distinctive, giving plenty of sweetness but avoiding the unnatural tasting sweetness of cordials and other sweeteners. Floral notes add further depth before a drier character emerges in the finish. The gin is flavoursome and charming creation and it mixes well for a summery G&T with a garnish of mint or raspberry. - Paul Jackson, 2019 |

MEET THE MAKERS"My wife and I are both 'born and bred' Orcadians and we live in Kirkwall where we grew up, and so we wanted to create a brand that was connected to us and our place."
