About Umodzi Gin
Launched in August 2021 by founder Dave Mountain, Umodzi Gin is distilled in South Africa and features botanicals from 12 African countries, including mangoes from Malawi, ginger from Ethiopia, black pepper from Nigeria and cardamom from Ghana. Unlike most gins which are grain-based, Umodzi Gin is distilled with a base made from sugarcane which is shredded and pressed to obtain the liquid from it. The name 'Umodzi' is drawn from the Chichewa language of Malawi where it means unity and togetherness. |

The Gin Guide Review
Umodzi Gin celebrates African botanicals with a complex combination of fruity citrus, hints of topical mango, and earthy, peppery spice. It is a flavoursome gin with initial subtly sweet citrus being neatly balanced with underlying earthiness and cut through by warming spice and pepper which lead into the finish. The use of a sugarcane base can be boldly apparent and can distract from the juniper and botanicals, but in Umodzi Gin the base alcohol is skilfully integrated and complementary. With Tonic Water, the flavour profile holds true and is clearly determinable for a fitting tribute to the continent. - Paul Jackson, 2021 |
Meet the Makers
"I felt very strongly like there was a big opportunity to create a luxurious sugarcane gin, that was made with and influenced from multiple African countries – I knew this would be popular with the African Diaspora, those that have travelled across Africa and those that like the finer things in life." - Dave Mountain, Founder
