Whaler Gin

Whaler Gin was launched in Germany in 2025 by spirits brand Decka and is distilled at Sauerländer Edelbrand near Dortmund. Whaler Gin was created with the aim of reinterpreting the classic London Dry Gin and capturing the essence of the coast. It is distilled with 24 botanicals including seaweed rich in natural glutamate to impart umami characters, and part of the gin is also aged in wooden barrels.

Review: Whaler Gin (46% ABV)

  • Botanicals: 24 including juniper, red seaweed, green seaweed, coriander seeds, angelica root, cubebs, cardamom, sea fennel, sage, pine needles, citrus peels, cranberries. Base Spirit: Grain.​
  • Serving Suggestion: Gin & Tonic with a garnish of Grapefruit Peel and/or Samphire, or in a Martini.
  • Tasting Notes: Aromas of marine notes and sea spray, umami kelp and juniper. Savoury on the palate with sea fennel and coastal sage alongside citrus zest and pine. Warming cubebs and cardamom lead into the finish with hints of smokey wood.​
The Gin Guide Review: "Whaler Gin is a characterful coastal gin that harmoniously brings together savoury, green and herbaceous shoreline notes with bright citrus and pine. Infused with seaweed and coastal botanicals, the neat spirit's aroma instantly showcases this with bold, prominent notes of sea air, vegetal seaweed, and coastal herbs alongside zesty, fruity citrus and fresh pine. The flavour profile is pleasingly cohesive; juniper, pine, and citrus top notes increase their presence, while savoury coastal botanicals continue to play a defining role, lifted by fresh green notes of sea fennel. A salt and pepper character leads into the finish as subtly saline seaweed combines with peppery cubebs. Deep sage notes bring depth to the lingering finish before complementary smoked wood notes emerge and elongating the journey of flavour further.
