Wolftown Gin - Review & Tasting Notes
Wolftown Gin
Wolftown Gin was founded in 2019 by TV cameraman John McKeown who is based in Ulverston in Cumbria. The Wolftown name is inspired by Ulverston, with the market town's name being derived from the Norse word 'Ulfar' meaning 'wolf warrior'. The gin is distilled at Bottomley Distillery using the London Dry method and features sarsaparilla root as a signature botanical. John grew up drinking the soft drink 'Sass' and wanted to bring this taste of his childhood into the world of gin. |
The Gin Guide Review
Wolftown Gin is distinctive and flavourful with sarsaparilla root prominently offering its herbal, rooty and bitter characters. Alongside classic juniper, citrus peel and cinnamon, it achieves the important quality of making the gin distinguishable and recognisable. The nose is bold and aromatic and the mouthfeel is light and smooth, with the bitterness of the sarsaparilla being balanced by the subtle sweetness of cinnamon and citrus peels. Black pepper and a hint of ginger then emerge well in the light, lingering finish. The flavour and character hold very effectively with tonic, and orange peel or lemon peel make for ideal garnish starting points. - Paul Jackson, 2020 |
