Basalt Distillery

Basalt Distillery was established in 2021 by Martha Garbe and James Richardson, home to their iStill and located a stone's throw away from Northern Ireland's first UNESCO Heritage Site, Giants Causeway. The dramatic basalt coastline is an inspiration for their first gin, Giants Basalt Rock Gin, launched in 2022, with the water used in it having been naturally filtered through basalt rock and drawn from a 600ft borehole.

Giants Basalt Rock Gin

  • ​ABV: 50.1% (Base Spirit: Wheat)
  • Botanicals: 13 including juniper, cardamom, cubebs, ginger, cassia, buckwheat, sea buckthorn, lemon verbena, seaweed.
Tasting Notes: Aromas of earthy juniper, herbal citrus, cubeb pepperiness, and sea air. Dry on the palate with plentiful juniper, citrus, a zing of sea buckthorn, and soft, warm cassia and cardamom spice. A finish of  ginger, pepperiness, citrus, and a very subtle saline note.
Serving Suggestion / Garnish: Gin & Tonic with a garnish of Orange or Lemon, or in a Martini, Negroni or Bramble.
The Gin Guide Review: Giants Basalt Rock Gin skillfully combines traditional, dry character with a pleasing gentle nod to the Irish coast. At 50.1% ABV the volume of flavour held is notable, especially the abundant earthy juniper. The alcohol is impressively integrated with the botanicals, in particular through smooth buckwheat, warming ginger and zingy sea buckthorn. The combination of the sea buckthorn with the seaweed delivers an almost minty green freshness to the finish to contrast the spice and further the flavour journey. With Tonic Water, the juniper continues to be plentiful and the dry character remains, while the spice mellows and continues to bring depth to what is a thoroughly enjoyable G&T . - Paul Jackson, 2022

"The Giant’s Causeway was a huge inspiration for us. Basalt rock forms the Giant’s Causeway as well as the land that our distillery is built on. The unique characteristics and porous nature of this volcanic rock creates a natural filtration process that filters the water that we draw from our 600ft borehole and use to create Giants Basalt Rock Gin.
