Mataroa Gin
Mataroa Mediterranean Dry Gin:
Mataroa Gin's flagship gin was launched in 2019 and features 12 botanicals from around the Mediterranean, including chamomile from Cyprus, orris root from Italy, liquorice from Turkey and orange peel from Spain. The gin is distilled at Melissandi Distillery in Greece - established in 1924 and one of the oldest distilleries in the country - and the second gin in the range, Mataroa Pink Gin, was launched in 2020. The name is inspired by the ship Mataroa which made two important journeys across the Mediterranean in 1945 - one from Marseilles to Haifa with 173 rescued Hebrew refugee children, and the second with students fleeing political prosecutions. |
The Gin Guide Review
Mataroa Gin's botanical list is a real journey around the Mediterranean and the flavours deliver just that. Expecting bright Mediterranean citrus to burst from the bottle, it is actually the savoury, liquorice and chamomile notes that are at the forefront on the nose with an abundance of piney juniper. This character also starts off on the palate before revealing depth and complexity as mandarin and lavender shine through with bay leaf giving balance. The mouthfeel is smooth and relatively dry, with a long, lingering finish that sees lemon peel and orange peel flavour emerging further. When mixed with tonic the character stands up well and remains balanced, with orange or thyme being ideal starting points for garnishes. - Paul Jackson, 2019 |
