Portofino Dry Gin - Review & Tasting Notes
Portofino Dry Gin
Launched in 2019, Portofino Gin was created in homage to Klaus Pudel who help save the village of Portofino from destruction during the Second World War. Portofino is a picturesque fishing village in Liguria, clustered around a small harbour with colourfully painted buildings that are represented on the gin bottle. The gin is produced at the nearby Antica Distilleria Quaglia - a historic distillery also known for their vermouths and bitters. Each botanical is individually macerated in the wheat base spirit for 7 days before each being distilled in a copper pot still or rotovap before being blended. |
The Gin Guide Review
Portofino Dry Gin is light and dry with citrus, floral and herbaceous notes combining for a distinguishable and charming Mediterranean character. Juniper, lemon and floral rose are fragrant on the nose, with the florals settling and herbaceous notes elevating on the palate alongside citrus, juniper and hints of fennel. The finish sees warmth develop with earthy notes, herbaceous bay and rosemary, fennel/anise and soft spice. With a drop of water or dash of tonic the flavour and mouthfeel become more rounded and full. It's a gin that's likely to go down well with fans of dry and herbaceous gins, and lemon peel makes for an ideal garnish starting point. - Paul Jackson, 2020 |

Meet the Makers
Our company was founded in homage to my grandfather, Klaus Pudel, who had a tremendous passion for Portofino and contributed to writing its history by saving the village during WWII. His love and admiration for the Italian Riviera have been conveyed through the generations, and we want continue this by creating a gin that Klaus would have enjoyed on the “Piazzetta” – the iconic square in Portofino - watching the sunset on the colourful harbour. - Co-Founder, Ruggero Raymo
