MCM Distillery
MCM Distillery in Skopje was established in 2021 and their flagship gin, Smidgin, was conceived by gin enthusiasts Graeme Lowther and Ivan Skenderoski and inspired by their desire to showcase the world-renowned North Macedonian juniper. Smidgin is a one-shot London Dry Gin distilled in a traditional 300L copper alembic still. The gin features fresh juniper rather than the traditionally used dried juniper, as well as mountain tea - a type of wild sage.

Smidgin (41% ABV)

  • Botanicals: 14 including juniper, mountain tea, orange peel, grapefruit peel, lemon peel, lime peel, raisins, ginger, cinnamon, cloves, black pepper, almonds. Base Spirit: Grain.​​
  • Serving Suggestions: Gin & Tonic with a garnish of Lemon Peel or Grapefruit, or in a Martini, White Lady or Gimlet.
  • ​Tasting Notes: Aromas of juniper, grapefruit and orange citrus, earthy spice and soft herbal notes. On the palate, piney juniper, fresh citrus, spice and herbal mountain tea. A dry finish of warm ginger and pepper spice, cinnamon, and lingering citrus.
The Gin Guide Review: Smidgin is a complex, balanced and skilfully constructed gin with depth and a journey of flavour, from the aroma through to the finish. Even on the nose there is complexity, with grapefruit and orange citrus, piney juniper, earthy spice of ginger, cinnamon and cloves, and subtle herbal notes. On the palate there is a hearty and classic core of botanicals together with fresh and fruity citrus, underpinned by warm spice which fully emerges alongside black pepper and the herbal mountain tea to bring in and carry through the lingering finish. Smidgin Velvet Gin features the 14 botanicals of Smidgin Gin as well as lavender, blueberry, cranberry and rose hips, with a natural violet colour from Thai butterfly pea flowers.

"We felt as though we were bringing gin back to its source, back home to the best juniper. The initial trials with fresh juniper absolutely convinced us that we were on the right track and with gins appearing almost every day with whacky ingredients, we wanted to create a classic gin that respected Macedonia’s beautiful juniper, a purist’s gin. It felt like an injustice that people in North Macedonia are surrounded by such superb juniper but without a single gin distillery in the country to release its potential, until now.
