Thunderflower Distillery
Thunderflower Distillery in Devon was established in 2017 by Dominic and Anicca O'Nions and they launched their flagship gin, Thunderflower Gin, in 2018 which is distilled with a 'one shot' vapour-infusion in their 200L pot still. The 'Thunderflower' name is derived from an old Devonshire legend that says the tiny white 'thunderflowers' that can grow on thatched cottage roofs can ward off both lightning and witchcraft. In 2020, Dominic and Anicca launched their Navy Strength Gin, 'FireShip', inspired by the last invasion of England in 1690 in their hometown of Teignmouth, during which 'Fire Ships' were used - wooden ships packed with gunpowder that were set alight and launched towards the enemy fleet. In 2024, Thunderflower moved to a new distillery Exeter with more space and to offer tours and tastings.

Thunderflower Devon Dry Gin (42% ABV)

  • ​​​​Botanicals: 11 including juniper, coriander seeds, angelica root, cassia bark, liquorice, pink peppercorn, cardamom, lemon, elderflower, heather, sage, lemongrass. Base spirit: Grain.
  • ​Tasting Notes: Aromas of juniper, lemony citrus, earthy spice and delicate floral notes. Dry and herbaceous on the palate with juniper, pepper spice, floral notes and lemon. A warm and peppery finish with lingering herbs, cassia and juniper.
  • Serving / Garnish Suggestions: Gin & Tonic with a garnish of Lemon or Lime, or in a Martini, Negroni or Gimlet.
The Gin Guide Review: From its name your might suspect that Thunderflower Gin would be dominated by floral flavours from the 'thunderflowers' and elderflower, however it is its herbaceous and peppery spice characters that sets it apart. Aromatic and bold sage and heather combine with piney, peppery juniper, lemon and cardamom spice for a distinctive and enjoyably dry and savoury profile with depth of flavour. A garnish of lemon or lime brings the ideal balance in a G&T, bringing out the lemongrass and adding the fruity, citrus notes to contrast the savoury botanicals. While sweetness and fruitiness are increasingly prominent in the gin market, Thunderflower Gin refreshingly and successfully bucks the trend. - Paul Jackson, 2021

Meet the Makers

"We use a quite a few botanicals in our gins as we like complex flavours. When we start with a recipe we select broad flavour zones such as Spice, Floral, Herbal, Citrus for example to decide where the flavour balance of the gin is going to be and then select the various botanicals that match the balance. We then start building a recipe from there, adding and removing botanicals and adjusting the various quantities over a series of iterations until we get a balance that is just right." - Anicca & Dominic O'Nions, Founders
