The Gin Guide Gin Awards 2017
The launch of The Gin Guide Awards in 2017 was on a much smaller scale than the 2018 Awards, but was met with overwhelming consumer engagement and involvement from gin producers. We were proud to celebrate this wonderful category and the incredible products, distilleries, events and people within it.
Winners were selected by The Gin Guide tasting panel of industry experts with specialisms in gin production, mixology and marketing. Details and commentary were correct at time of publication. Read on to find out which gins won awards in 2017! |
NB Gin - London Dry Gin
NB Gin impressed the panel with its exceptional quality and representation of the traditional, juniper-led, London Dry Gin style. Created from scratch by former lawyers Steve and Viv Muir, NB Gin started life with a homemade still in the couple's kitchen. With the distillery opening to the public for tours and visitors, there's a bright future for this classic style gin.

Bertha's Revenge Gin - Gin Innovation
Varieties of grain alcohol have been the staple bases for gin producers, but the team at Ballyvolane House in Ireland shook up tradition with their warming, spiced and smooth Bertha's Revenge Irish Milk Gin, using whey alcohol as the base for their increasingly popular gin that impressed both the panel and consumers this year.

Pinkster Gin - Contemporary Gin
The gin category has seen an explosion of contemporary gins with a twist or with less traditional botanicals and flavour profiles, and popularity with consumers is vast. Pinkster Gin has found the balance of being a gin with a raspberry twist rather than being a raspberry gin, making it versatile, full of character.

Fishers Gin - Super Premium (over £40)
Distinctive, aromatic and full of flavour, Fishers Gin represents the flavours of the British coastline with botanicals including rock samphire, bog myrtle and wood avon. At this price point It isn't an everyday gin, but Fishers Gin's quality and instantly recognisable character make it a rewarding investment.

Bedrock Gin - Gin Under £25
Smooth, well-balanced and with prominent citrus, Bedrock Gin was launched in 2008 and is inspired by the Lake District. The gin features Lake District water and 11 botanicals, and has achieved a Gold Award at the International Wine and Spirits Competition. As the average price of gin rises, Bedrock Gin demonstrates that you can buy quality gin on a budget.

Siegfried Gin - European Gin (non-UK)
Siegfried Gin from Germany is responsible for what was one of the panel's favourite Gin & Tonics of the year. With a premium tonic and lemon peel, it delivers a stunning G&T. Siegfried Gin is inspired by a German poetic saga and features Linden blossoms as a botanical. It deserves recognition beyond Germany and will hopefully become more available in the UK in the near future.

Old Bakery Gin - Newly Launched Gin
Launched at the end of 2016, Old Bakery Gin combines a sumptuous gin with a fantastic story, steering clear of gimmicks and statement signature botanicals. With a host of advocates and the passion of Founder Ian Puddick, the gin's history as an illicitly produced recipe looks set to be just the beginning of the story.

Beckett's Gin - Spirit of Gin
This category is for producers that go beyond making gin. As well as being a well-balanced and refreshing gin, Beckett's Gin have developed a conservation project with the Forestry Commission to establish sustainable juniper growth in Surrey. With the vast majority of gins importing dried juniper from abroad, British sourced juniper is an exciting prospect.

Brecon Botanicals Gin - People's Vote
From over 2,000 votes, Brecon Botanicals Gin claimed the People's Vote award from a formidable shortlist. Votes on The Gin Guide, on social media, and at events and tastings were tallied up with Pendryn Distillery in Wales achieving the most votes in a close contest alongside 6 o'clock Gin, Monkey 47 Gin and Opihr Gin.
