NEW ‘ULTRASONIC’ GIN LAUNCHED TO HELP PROTECT BATS Hertfordshire based, multi-award-winning gin-makers Puddingstone Distillery have partnered once again with Herts and Middlesex Wildlife Trust to produce a one-of-a-kind gin, using an ultrasound distilling method inspired by bats. Puddingstone Distillery is owned by Ben and Kate Marston, the producers of Campfire Gin. Following their success in winning the Gin Guide “Distillery of the Year 2021”, the team at Puddingstone have launched Ultrasonic gin as a part of their fourth year of partnership with Herts and Middlesex Wildlife Trust. Inspired by the flight of native bats through the British countryside, the gin is created using a unique two-stage process. Botanicals are macerated in alcohol and water whilst being subjected to ultrasonic frequencies that assist in the release of aromatic oils. The second stage see’s these botanicals and the extracted oils added to Isabella, the smaller of the distilleries two stills, where a slow pot distillation process takes place. The gin leads with an earthy juniper profile that is underpinned by sweetness from elderflower and roasted barley. This yields to the subtle freshness of apple and mint. Bats inspired the creation of Ultrasonic gin not only for their unique use of ultrasound to navigate whilst in flight, but also due to their status as an indicator species, serving as a measurement of how well wildlife is faring and how well conservation efforts are working because they occupy a wide range of habitats and are sensitive to changes in the environment. Ultrasonic gin will be launched on International Gin Day on 12 June. For each bottle sold, Puddingstone Distillery will donate £2 to Herts and Middlesex Wildlife Trust to support the charity’s work protecting bats and other wildlife across Hertfordshire and Middlesex.
