About Maidstone Distillery
|
Founded by husband and wife, Darren and Sam Graves, Maidstone Distillery opened in 2020 and is situated in the historic Market Buildings in the centre of Maidstone. The distillery hosts tours and gin making experiences using mini copper stills, as well as offering event packages and private hire of their Bishop's Bar. Maidstone Distillery's flagship gin is inspired by and named after George Bishop, a Maidstone native who travelled to The Netherlands in 1774 to learn to distill genever. Upon returning to Maidstone during the time of limitations and high taxes enforced by the Gin Act, he successfully lobbied the government for the allowance of the regulated and controlled production of Genever without paying the prohibitive duties.

George Bishop Gin Review
Tasting Notes: Fragrant with aromas of piney juniper, bright citrus, chamomile and soft spice. Plentiful citrus, with subtle sweetness, earthiness and pine on the palate, moving into peppery spice. A long finish of biscuity anise notes and lingering citrus and cinnamon. Serving Suggestion / Garnish: Gin & Tonic with a garnish of Orange or Grapefruit, or in a Negroni or White Lady cocktail. |
The Gin Guide Review: George Bishop Gin is a flavoursome and characterful gin with a particularly impressive finish. The nose is enticing and when neat you are taken on a journey of flavour on the palate, from citrus and juniper to cardamom and chamomile, before peppery spice leads into a finish biscuity anise notes and caraway seeds, and finally citrus and cinnamon linger. With Tonic Water it is a soft and enjoyable serve with plenty of flavour from the pine, chamomile and cardamom which are elevated when mixed, with a pleasing balance of citrus and spice. - Paul Jackson, 2021

Ranscombe Wild Gin Review
Tasting Notes: Aromas of florals, pine and herbal notes. Juniper, orange peel, vibrant tangerine, soft florals and nutty notes on the palate. A finish of drier herbaceous notes, herbal fresh mint, lingering peppery juniper and subtly sweet cassia. Serving Suggestion / Garnish: Gin & Tonic with a garnish of Orange or Rosemary, or in a Negroni or Bee's Knees cocktail. |
The Gin Guide Review: Launched in 2020, Ranscombe Wild Gin is a contemporary London Dry Gin, and Maidstone Distillery donate 2.5% of profits from its sales to Plantlife to support their conservation work. The foraged botanicals from Ranscombe Farm Reserve in Kent are pleasingly evident with green herbal notes or marjoram, red clover, and mint alongside soft floral jasmine and hints of chestnut. Then, with the addition of Tonic Water, these characters are given bold contrast from fresh, vibrant and subtly sweet tangerine. - Paul Jackson, 2021

Meet the Makers
"We have lovingly restored our distillery, in the heart of our town. Set in a beautiful building where the local community can learn about our rich legacy. We wanted a place where people can see our spirits being made first hand, and experience the art of distilling in a fun and exciting way."
