Plymouth Gin Review & Tasting Notes
About Plymouth Gin
Plymouth Gin is distilled in-house in a Victorian copper still at Black Friars Distillery in Plymouth - the oldest British distillery to still be operating from its original site. Plymouth Gin, now owned by Pernod Ricard, is distilled using the same combination of 7 botanicals, grain alcohol and water from Dartmoor in a recipe that dates back as far as 1793. With a quayside location, Plymouth Gin historically made large sales to the British Royal Navy. Parts of the distillery building even date back to 1431 when it was a monastery for the Black Friars, and as such each bottle features a monk near the base. The Gin Guide Review Plymouth Gin comes with a fascinating, turbulent and long history. Perhaps the most remarkable part is that the gin itself largely maintained its production style, recipe and character throughout that history, barring a couple of blips. It is well worth visiting Black Friars Distillery to discovery the history in more detail. Plymouth Gin is a classic gin, with an appealing balance of citrus, earthiness and juniper. Completed with a pleasingly full and slightly oily mouthfeel, it is a must-try gin and should have its place on every gin shelf for both its history and the quality of spirit. - Paul Jackson, 2016 Buy Plymouth Gin
