Located on Bride Lane just off Fleet Street, City of London Distillery (COLD) and bar was launched by Jonathan Clark in 2012. COLD's location was at the centre of the gin craze in the 1700s and many gin companies have their roots in the area too, however COLD became the only distillery in the Square Mile for 200 years and continues to be the only distillery there.
Heading down the stairs you are greeted by the bar that spans most of one side of the venue and is proudly backed by displays of COLD gins and a range of other gins and spirits. The bar team are friendly, skilled, knowledgeable and passionate about gin and cocktails, contributing to an impressive and enjoyable experience when visiting for a G&T or a cocktail. Directly opposite the bar, and behind a wall of glass, is the distillery with COLD's three copper stills prominently displayed and making for a stunning backdrop to the comfortable and classy seating area. COLD's carry out one-shot distillations in their stills and distil 5 days a week, using two 200L stills (Clarissa and Jennifer, named after the Two Fat Ladies stars) and a 500L still named Elizabeth in honour of the Queen's Jubilee.
Alongside the stills is the area where gin making experiences are held, giving gin enthusiasts the opportunity to be tutored in botanical selection before creating their own gin recipe and distilling it in individual copper stills. In the run up to Christmas there is plenty of activity as the COLD team recreate batches of past visitors' gin creations that have been back-ordered to be given as Christmas gifts or for serving at Christmas events.
With evolution in the recipes, distillation and bottling along the way, City of London Distillery has developed an impressive and classic range of gins, including City of London Gin, Christopher Wren Gin, The Square Mile Gin, an Old Tom, a Sloe Gin, and their newly launched Six Bells Lemon Gin and Murcian Orange Gin.
Now part of the Halewood portfolio to facilitate international expansion, City of London Distillery combines authenticity with accessibility to create to a destination distillery, a quality product range with a history, and a charming bar that sees gin lovers returning time after time.
