Liverpool, Wirral & Merseyside Gins & Distilleries
On This Page: Liverpool, Wirral and Merseyside Gin and Distillery guide and map, distillery tours and gin schools, interviews with Merseyside distillers, and behind the scenes features.
Liverpool and Merseyside's commercial distilling history dates back to the 1800s when two whisky distilleries were operating, Vauxhall and Bank Hall. Bank Hall Distillery was located on the road in Liverpool now named Juniper Street, and Vauxhall Distillery went on to produce neutral spirit for gin distilleries in London. Neither distillery survives today, but there are now four gin distilleries across Liverpool and the Wirral, from Sea Ridge micro distillery to one of the UK's largest producers, Halewood International - makers of Whitley Neill Gin, Dead Man's Fingers Rum, and Liverpool Gin.

Meet the Makers
Get to know some of Merseyside's finest gin creators and distillers in our 'Meet the Maker' interviews. Find out what inspired them and how they created and launched their gin, how it's made, what botanicals are used, what you can experience if you visit their distilleries, how best to serve their gins, and what they have planned for the future:
Steve Tapril - Founder of Tappers Gin:
"I had a revelation that many of the unique, beautifully packaged, ‘hyper-local’ bottles of gin I’d collected over the years were in fact produced by the same big UK distilleries that had been contracted out to produce for brand owners. Six months of ranting later and I decided to turn my frustrations into something constructive and decided to make my own gin and show that it could be done." |

Tappers Gin
Launched in West Kirby in 2016 by Steve Tapril, Tappers Gin Distillery moved to a new site in Upton in 2021. In 2020, Tappers Distillery launched their London Dry 'Brightside Gin' to follow their original cold compounded 'Darkside Gin', making them the first distillery to produce both a distilled and cold compounded version of the same recipe, which features botanicals such as black cardamom, red clover, chickweed and sea beet. The distillery also produces a range of seasonal editions and a Pink Gin in collaboration with chef Simon Rimmer.

The Handmade Gin Company
The Homemade Gin Company was established in 2016 after gin lover Peter Golightly began experimenting with a copper still after gaining the appropriate licenses. Having decided on the hero ingredients of lemon and ginger, inspired by the gingerbread-making history of his Lancashire hometown of Ormskirk, Ormskirk Gin was launched in 2016 along with Wirral Gin. The Handmade Gin Company now producers over 40 gin varieties and 26 gin liqueurs, as well as having produced over 150 white-label bespoke gins for other companies.
