What did you do before creating One Gin? My background is in advertising and I started my career in integrated agencies. I then joined One Water, where I led product development, innovation and marketing. But I also had a penchant for gin, particularly in dry martinis and negronis! What's the inspiration behind One Gin? The One brand was born out of a simple idea 15 years ago – to sell bottled water in the UK and donate the proceeds to fund safe, clean water projects in the world’s poorest communities. The brand was called ‘One’ because it changes lives one bottle at a time, one day at a time. On World Water Day 2017, building on the awareness and growing community of One Water, One Gin was launched - turning the British public’s love of gin into a force of good and combining our passion for beautiful, premium gin and a belief that business can make the world a better place. We commit to donating a minimum of 10% of our profit to fund clean, sustainable water programmes in the world's poorest communities. #OneGoodGin How did you get from the idea to the finished product? One Gin was conceived out of the realisation that there was real appetite from gin lovers for a distinctive, savoury offering. The answer came in the form of one of our most loved and multi facetted botanicals: fresh sage. We worked closely with World Duty Free, a long time supporter of One Water, who offered to support the launch One Gin in their stores… It was the first gin ever to launch in World Duty Free which was just right given our mission. Can you tell us about the distillery and distillation process? One Gin is distilled in the black country, at Langley's Distillery in Oldbury, home to some of the oldest working copper pot gin stills, some dating back to the early 1800s. One Gin is distilled from a 100% British wheat base as a London Dry Gin in a copper pot still. It comprises 9 core botanicals plus its signature, sage. What is the cause that One Gin supports? The One Brand was created to tackle the global water crisis. Shockingly, 785 million people around the world still do not have access to clean water - a basic right that’s more important than ever right now, when clean water and hygiene play a pivotal role in the fight against Covid-19. Over 3 million people die every year from waterborne diseases. Most are children under 5 years old. Women are the hardest hit by the water crisis - collectively, women and girls spend 200 million hours every day fetching water, which often means having to forego school or a job. We donate a minimum of 10% of our profit to fund clean, sustainable water programmes in the world's poorest communities. To date, One Gin has donated over £20k, changing the lives of over 2,500 people in Ghana and Malawi. The humble butterfly is central to our brand; it’s been said that the tiny flutter of its wings can trigger a cyclone on the other side of the world. This belief – that small acts can lead to great change – is at the heart of what we do. How would you describe One Gin in 3 words? Savoury. Distinctive. Meaningful. What makes your One Gin different? One Gin is unique both in flavour profile - with its signature botanical of fresh sage; and it its purpose - the first gin created for a humanitarian cause. What's your favourite way to drink your gin?
It's delicious served neat or simply on the rocks. But we think it's just perfect as a G&T, poured over ice with a premium tonic water. Garnish our original London Dry with a twist of orange zest, or our Sage & Apple Gin with crisp slices of apple. What are your favourite gins (other than One Gin of course!)? I’m a big fan of juniper forward gins - Adnams First Rate Gin being a great example. But I also love Naud Gin from the cognac region in France for something a little different. And I will always go back to Beefeater Gin. What’s next for One Gin – any exciting plans? Many! We are looking forward to the One Butterfly taking off globally this year and we are also working on a big launch at the end of this year which will take us to another level, so watch this space.
