What made you decide to create a new gin?Passion. We had been gin enthusiasts for quite a while and were looking for the gin which had, in our eyes, the perfect taste. As we couldn't find it, we decided to create it on our own - following Nike´s motto "Just do it". How did you go from the idea to the finished product?In a nutshell: Defining the tasting profile, creating a brand, finding a high quality partner that shares our vision and passion. What's the distillery and distillation process like?The distillery is located south of Bonn in a very rural, calm and quiet region. This is important as this calmness also affects how the gin is distilled: quality first, no need to hurry. PJ Schütz, our master distiller is mad about quality. We macerate each of the botanicals in a way that fits best for that specific botanical and its characteristics. We then use a very traditional copper alembic to distill the essence for Siegfried in small batches. How did the name for Siegfried Gin come about?Siegfried is the main character in the famous ancient German "Nibelung Saga“, known worldwide from the Wagner Opera where he became a legendary hero by defeating an evil dragon. The linden tree plays a leading role in this context as Siegfried took a bath in the blood of the defeated dragon to become invulnerable. But a leaf from the linden tree fell on his back and prevented full invulnerability. Like in the saga, linden also changes the game in Siegfried Gin's recipe as linden blossoms are the lead botanical that create a unique taste experience and at the same time underline the symbiotic connection between brand and product. Furthermore, there is also a geographical connection between the brand name Siegfried and the distillery as the place where the fight between Siegfried and the dragon took place (according to the saga) is right next to our headquarters. What has the journey been like since you launched Siegfried Gin?It has been a wild and exciting ride. We have been very fortunate to create a product that people and international expert juries liked the same way. For us, it has been a dream come true. And the ride goes and on and we learn something new every single day. How would you describe your gin in 3 words?Straight, complex, smooth. What makes Siegfried Gin different to other gins?Even though Siegfried Gin aims to be a classical straight Dry Gin focusing on juniper, there is a lot to discover as the tasting profile with linden blossoms is very special and unique. What's your favourite way to drink Siegfried Gin?Straight at room temperature or with a premium tonic water as a Gin & Tonic. I personally also like it in a Negroni very much! What's next for Siegfried Gin?We will be launching "Biggie" pretty soon, which will be a 3 litre bottle of Siegfried Gin. Before summer, we will also launch our limited design edition 'NEON #2'.
