For each gin featured below, in alphabetical order from 3 SQ. If you fancy picking up bottle of a gin for yourself, there are links to the online shop for each too :-) 3 SQ. Miles Gin - Cape Clear Distillery, Ireland Co-Founder, Chris Mason: With local laminaria digitata (a form of sugar kelp) used in the distillation of our 3 SQ. Miles Gin, the taste of the sea and our island really come through. This makes it a natural pairing with seafood; we’ve found it particularly good with shrimp and langoustines. Buy via Celtic Whiskey Shop. Gin & Tonic Garnish Suggestion: Our gin works very well in a coast-inspired gin and tonic. Try garnishing with cucumber and samphire. Cocktail: In The Clear The “In the Clear” cocktail is a really lovely and unique cocktail. Note that this original recipe was very much a connoisseur’s cocktail, but we found that by adding Italicus, it was much more approachable. Follow the recipe below or watch the full recipe video.
Bullards Coastal Gin, EnglandHead Distiller, Jake Wilson: Our Coastal Gin is bursting with herbaceous botanicals (including Marsh Samphire, Sea Aster, Sea Purslane and Wild Fennel), bright citrus flavours and a delicate saltiness that is great with Tonic Water. Buy direct from Bullards Gin. Gin & Tonic Garnish Suggestion: A simple serve really accentuates our Coastal Gin's blend of botanicals, and we recommend serving this with a classic Tonic Water, fresh blackberries, and lime peel to garnish. Cocktail: Coastal Margatini For something a little more creative, we recommend the Coastal Margatini. Playing upon our gin’s balance between citrus and salinity, this cocktail is light, crisp and playfully complex:
Caprisius Gin, Italy Founder, Luca Stabile: Caprisius Gin was born from the desire to tell the story of the island of Capri through a gin, starting from the sea that surrounds it up to the flavors of its land. It features juniper, lemon, marjoram, thyme and sea salt, all collected in Capri and distilled separately. Buy direct from Caprisius Gin. Gin & Tonic Garnish Suggestion: As a garnish for a Gin & Tonic with Caprisius Gin, we suggest Lemon peel and a Mint leaf. Cocktail: Hibiscus Fizz The best cocktail that we have tried with our gin is called a Hibiscus Fizz - made at the gin bar of Punta Tragara (the best hotel in Capri).
Greenwich Marine Gin, England Founder, Gonzalo Ruiz: Greenwich Gin is the perfect pairing between the finest British marine botanicals, including sea fennel, Atlantic dulse and kombu kelp, and the most enchanting accords from our world travels. Buy direct from Greenwich Gin. Gin & Tonic Garnish Suggestion: For a garnish, anything fresh is always a winner and we would recommend a fresh slice of pink grapefruit or lime. Optionally add rock samphire to highlight the fresh coastal elements of the gin and give your drink a fashionable look too! Cocktails: In the case of Greenwich Gin, because it carries such a delicate and refreshing flavour it can be enjoyed the most on the rocks, in a classic Martini or in a G&T with light premium tonic with a higher gin to tonic ratio. Seaside Gin - Sheringham Distillery, CanadaCaylee Kretschmer, Director of International Development: Inspired by the Vancouver Island coast, with its clean surf and fragrance of wild roses, evergreen forests, and salty air, our Seaside Gin features juniper, rose, lavender, citrus, cardamom, and - most notably - local, sustainably harvested winged kelp, which gives it a subtle taste of the ocean. Buy direct from Sheringham Distillery or via Waldo's Drinks (UK). Gin & Tonic Garnish Suggestion: Lemon Peel Cocktail: Canary Diamond
Tide's Fortune Gin - East Coast Distillery, England Co-Founder, Ben Mann: Our Tide's Fortune Essex Dry Gin is a celebration of the Essex coast. We use locally foraged Sea Purslane that grows along the estuary. It's an intertidal plant so is often covered with sea water giving it a rich, mineral quality and a slight salinity to the gin, paired with the bold sharpe / sweet citrus notes of the locally sourced Sea Buckthorn. Buy direct from East Coast Distillery. Gin & Tonic Garnish Suggestion: We serve ours served with Coast Tonic which uses a small amount of sea salt in production and really enhances that coastal nature of our gin. Garnish with a twist of lemon peel and it's perfect. Cocktail: Juliet & Romeo Our Essex Dry is a classic Martini gin served with a twist of lemon peel but we recently made a very good Juliet and Romeo cocktail. The fresh cucumber in this alongside the tiny amount of salt works beautifully:
Tappers Darkside & Brightside Coastal Gins, EnglandSteve Tapril - Tappers Gin: I wanted to prove a local gin really could be local, so I set about researching local seaside botanicals that grow around my hometown of West Kirby and the rest of the Wirral Peninsula, and the flavours they’d impart. Our gins, true to their seaside connection, are made using foraged sea beet, chickweed, and red clover along with some of the traditional gin botanical fare such as coriander. And juniper. Lots of juniper! Buy direct from Tappers Distillery. Gin & Tonic Garnish Suggestion: For a classic G&T, I ultimately settled on a garnish of orange and thyme – and this works for both our Darkside and Brightside Coastal Gins. The orange rounds off what is otherwise a very savoury gin when it comes to Darkside, while marrying well with the more pronounced citrus notes of Brightside. Thyme is a delicate herb and the perfect accompaniment to those strong savoury notes in Darkside, and slightly softer herbaceous flavours in Brightside. Cocktails: When it comes to something more adventurous, we’ve had feedback from connoisseurs around the country that Darkside makes one of the best Negronis out there. As my favourite cocktail, I’m inclined to agree! My preferred ratios are:
