Which is the Best Gin for Making Sloe Gin?We're frequently asked 'which gin should I use for sloe gin?'. Sloes vary greatly from place to place and from year to year, which is part of the joy of sloe gin and is the overriding factor in what your sloe gin will taste like. However, the amount of sugar you add and your choice of gin can also impact the flavour, character and smoothness. So we've put together a guide to help you choose an affordable and ideal gin, based on the subtleties you are looking to have in your sloe gin - bittersweet and fruity, earthy and classic, or wintery and spiced. Plus we've highlighted some of the best value options at the moment, some of which are currently on offer (links go to Amazon or the distillers' website).
For bittersweet & fruity sloe ginTo help bring out and showcase the tang and tartness of the sloes along with a smooth mouthfeel, these are some ideal gins to start with. They each have bittersweet citrus character that works beautifully with sloes and can enhance the fruitiness, and they won't break the bank either. For earthy & classic sloe ginMany classic gins contain a combination of roots and other botanicals that can give earthy undertones to your sloe gin and make an ideal base for the bold fruitiness of the sloes. For example, Boodles Gin and Tanqueray Gin contain no citrus botanicals. There is a wealth of excellent quality, affordable and juniper-led London Dry gins that will work a treat. Adding crushed almonds to your sloe gin mix can also take your sloe gin to another level with a earthy, nutty character. For warming & spiced sloe ginMany people like to add cinnamon, cloves and/or orange peel to their sloe gin mix to give it a wintery, spiced and warming feel. If you want to take this to the next level or just have subtleties of these flavours, try using gins that have spiced and warming characteristics themselves to achieve stunning depth of flavour. As I go the other way from Tip 1 (1lb sugar 1lb sloes 1 bottle gin) not sure how relevant this is, but a couple of years ago I did to a comparative maceration with a few different gins. Simple clean ones such as No3 and Martin Millers were best but the difference was marginal. Comments are closed.
