Zeiver Gin - Review & Tasting Notes
About Zeiver Gin
Launched in 2020, Zeiver (pronounced Zay-ver) was developed by James Bilson and Clayton Patterson in collaboration with Dr John Walters, an Oxford PhD biochemist and the founder and distiller at The English Spirit Distillery. Inspired by the Japanese spirit Shōchū, the base spirit is made with polished rice from the Niigata prefecture on the west coast of Japan's Honshu island. The gin is distilled in 200-litre copper alembic stills with juniper alongside the innovative use of botanicals including peach, cherry, macadamia nuts and aloe vera. The name is derived from the Dutch word 'Zuiver', meaning 'pure'. |
The Gin Guide Review
Zeiver's botanicals are innovative and contemporary, and in the back of your mind you wonder if the gin will be overpoweringly sweet or fruity, but it certainly avoids these pitfalls. It's a decidedly clean, fresh and crisp spirit that is delicate and subtle, making it highly versatile for cocktails. At 47% ABV there can be a risk of harshness, however Zeiver is impressively smooth and light for a spirit at this ABV. Zeiver means 'pure' and it delivers on this, avoiding over-complicating or confusing flavours. And unlike many alternative base spirits which can change the character of a spirit entirely, the rice base spirit does not steal the show with unexpected characteristics. It is absolutely calling out for a Martini! |

MEET THE MAKERS
"We don’t use any standard botanicals, except for the all-important juniper of course. That means no cassia, no coriander, no angelica root etc. We use a completely unique blend of botanicals including Peach, Aloe Vera and Macadamia Nuts." - Co-Founder, James Bilson
